This research explores the factors impacting on lone parents' decisions to return to work or enter training. It is based on interviews with 82 lone parents in Northern Ireland and lone parents in Malta, Lithuania, Italy and Spain. The views of lone parents are analysed in the context of government policies. The findings point to the persistence of structural and gender inequalities which present obstacles to many lone parents being encouraged to enter the labour market.
