This chapter looks at the representation of religion in recent Irish cinema and argues that a dominant motif has been the humiliation or punishment of the Catholic priest. Ireland is a much more secular society than previously and these hard-hitting critiques of the Church reflects both the diminished status of Catholicism in Ireland and also is a response to recurring child abuse scandals involving the clergy.
