This paper examines the issue of differentiation within performances for young audiences. Using the performance project, The Little Box of Wonders, it compares the processes undertaken within drama workshops for children to ensure the engagement with participants as individuals, with the ways in which performances engage with spectators as a single audience entity. It argues that differentiation may be achieved through a range of formal strategies that might be regarded as characteristic of effective children's theatre.
