The rapid increase in software complexityhas led to an urgent requirement to endowsoftware applications with enhanced selfadaptationand self-management capabilities,leading ultimately to the concept of autonomiccomputing. While the concept of autonomiccomputing has received significant attention itspractical implementation is presentingconsiderable challenges.In this paper, the principles of selforganisationare proposed as an approach toachieving autonomic software applications.The primary features of self-organisation areidentified and integrated into a Self-Organising Framework. It is shown that whenthe framework is embedded in an application,the application displays characteristics ofautonomic behaviour, and the capabilities ofself-evolution and self-configuration aredemonstrated.
