Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the study of knowledge management (KM) in China. It focuses on what does KM mean to China based upon KM studies, with a brief review in order to provide insightful understanding on KM from China perspective. The summary of recent studies and analysis of these give a solid research foundation in further KM research.Design/methodology/approach –The research is formed with structured literature review and analysis, to outline the KM scenarios and research questions in China. Data are collected through difference sources with a structured framework of the research aims.Findings – The role of KM in China is analyzed. The meaning of KM and its function in China are highlighted. How organizations in China were viewing and performing KM are discussed within a timeline. Practical implications –The view on KM is changing during the KM development in China, which gives an important background when conducting KM researches such as knowledge sharing and innovation in the future.Originality/value – KM is a relatively new topic in China that still under developing. China KM practices have its uniqueness. It is proven that to better understand KM in China, a developing point of view is necessary when conducting KM studies.Keywords: Knowledge Management, China, ReviewPaper type: research
