The chapter argues against the notion that the Anglo-Irish Agreement was the progenitor of the Belfast Agreement by focussing on the Provisional IRA's response to the Agreement. It points to the intensification of violence in the aftermath of the Agreement and argues that violence continued to be seen by the leadership of the Provisionals as a form of leverage on any future political negotiations
