Northern Ireland, as a constituent part of the United Kingdom, is prevented from achieving full membership in the international Olympic movement. Consequently the Commonwealth Games offer its athletes the only available opportunity to represent the country in a multisport event. The Games therefore take on added significance not only for the country’s leading athletes but principally for those who are unlikely to qualify for the Olympics as they compete below the IOC qualifying standards in their chosen discipline.
