Conor McPherson’s plays frequently evoke a sense of sexual violence and threat. The violence is not enacted on stage or expressed in violent dialogue, but rather is usually spoken by one character as a past-tense, reflective narrative, that functions to reveal something significant about the characters, their emotional states, or transitional events in their biographies. This essay aims to examine four of McPherson’s early plays to explore the representation of sexual violence and its dramatic function.
