Abstract

The aim of the paper is to profile the current practice andunderstanding of entrepreneurship in the context of academicinstitutions on the island of Ireland. A qualitative, sense-makingmethodology is used involving a purposeful sampling of perceptionsfrom staff at academic institutions in the Republic of Irelandand Northern Ireland. First, the concept of academic entrepreneurshipis explored both from an individual and from a corporateperspective. Second, comparative evidence of academic entrepreneurshipis presented to highlight significant differences betweenthe Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Recent contrastingpolicy differences are also identified. Third, a profile of the currentstate of academic entrepreneurship in Ireland is presented. Thediscussion then explores the main findings of the exercise andimplications in terms of how academic institutions best engage withentrepreneurship.
