Abstract

Data Roaming is a series of short Practice as Research projects that responds to the idea of borders as both conceptually rich and historically complex locations. These works are conceived of as initial responses, made on the move, evolving and unfinished. Paul Devlin began by asking a number of artists to consider the border through their practice and to foreground art/site relationships in that practice. Collectively, these works are trying to begin to explore how forms of aesthetic practice that are particular to the border region of the Derry-Donegal/Donegal-Derry borderlands might emerge. They begin to ask how performance might add to the border discourse. Sandie Fisher (dancer/choreographer), Laurence Roman (composer), Dave Duggan (playwright/performer), and Giuliano Campo (actor) will each produce a short performance work in response to borders, both notional and actual, in this performative panel. Paul Devlin has worked with each of the artists in developing their projects, especially from the perspective of latent and explicit art-site relations in their work. He also directs this event. Adrian O'Connell (Technician/Filmmaker) has worked to produce the projects and will also contribute a number of original film works as part of the panel. Data Roaming also marks the first performative collaboration of Thran, a Practice as Research performance company founded by Paul Devlin as a site for collaboration between artists and academics, artist-academics, and academic-practitioners. Thran is interested in all forms of performance where location/place/environment/ space are central to the questions being explored and the practices being developed.
