I was invited by Foyle Civic Trust to be a guest speaker in their 2010 lecture series, held in Prehen House, Derry, 24 June 2010. My presentation profiled an understanding of landscape and the profession of landscape architecture relating to Civic Trust Awards achieved in Northern Ireland since their introduction in 1959. People, place, lifestyle, ecology, sustainability, identity, heritage, management – landscape is all of these. The discipline of landscape architecture exists to design, enhance and sustain our external environment – to create the heritage areas of tomorrow. The diversity of the award winning projects reveals the breadth of the practice which is landscape architecture: Victoria Square Belfast 2009 - BDP; Newcastle Promenade 2007 – Scott Wilson; Cathedral Quarter & Custom House Square 2006 - The Paul Hogarth Company; The Mall Armagh 2005 – RPS; RUC George Cross Garden Belfast 2004 – Peter Hutchinson Design; Ecos Millennium Centre Ballymena 2001 – WDR & RT Taggart; Gracehill, Ballymena 1990 - DOE Landscape Section Ballymena Division; Galgorm Castle Ballymena 1992 - MWA Partnership. Structure of discourse: What is landscape? What is landscape architecture? What is the Landscape Institute / and Landscape Institute Northern Ireland? Who are the LINI practices, and what do they do? What are the Civic Trust Awards? What are the winning criteria and why? Critique of Northern Ireland's winning schemes. What is next for landscape architecture? Planning capacity and Green Infrastructure.
