Ralf Sander’s earlier work was predominantly occupied with the human image. He developed in this context a very distinguished artistic form. The sculptures are made usually from one large log of wood of human size. The artist uses the shape and direction of the form of growth to develop the character of his work. Also the choice of tree plays a role. He has for example chosen soft wood as lime-wood for delicate female characters while his Joseph Beuys portrait was made from oak which contained pieces of bomb shell from WWII. Spiegelungen der Wirklichkeit was a group exhibition about German Realism that contained a number of Sander’s earlier works, selected and curated by Prof. Dr. Karina Tuerr, for the Skulpturenforum Isernhagen, Duesseldorf, Germany
