'Surrender' was an integral part of the CMRUU 'London Street ' Exhibition at the Context Gallery , Derry in 2008. It is an art installation created in a collaborative partnership with myself as a UU Lecturer and Vincent O'Callaghan who was a UU PG student.Surrender is an impressionistic film which evokes the hidden lives of women in London St , Derry. Fleeting images hint at lost histories , at fragments of lives, of whispers of desire ,of gasps of fear.Close-ups of cracks in walls and pavements, dirty windows, from inside and outside, the imposing shadow of St Columb's Cathedral combine to suggest a hidden world of oppression , patriarchy, surrender. The red umbrella of a young woman shocks with the vibrancy of its rich colour -an unnerving and exciting intervention in the ancient street. The film ends with the composed silhouette of another young woman smoking at an open window -in control, savouring the moment , surrendering to pleasure .
