Abstract

‘Market Stall Performance, Nan City, Thailand as part of Asiatopia, 2013.The Market Stall Performance strategy has evolved over many years now and has been performed in many countries. I established it n the mid 1990’s as an ‘Interactive & Participatory Performance’ within which I try to sell my ‘wares’ in public trading places, i.e. Market Squares etc. I try to engage the public through subtle and satirical humor and surreal imagery, within the various processes and potential transactions offered at my stall. These include ‘Countries for Sale’, Centimeters for sale in an edition of 1/100, Second Hand Teeth, Moon for sale, a NATO Darts Game, Virtual Reality Goggles, Star Map Umbrella, etc.It is vital that the Market Stall is aligned to other traders and I perform like another Market Trader trying to sell my products and interactions. It is important that they are unaware of the work as a ‘performance’ within the category of art. It is therefore camouflaged, and the public, while in ‘consumer mode’, encounter ideas within the structure of the artwork or are forced to ask questions about the nature of my business and performance transactions. The key texts are translated into local languages beforehand. In Nan City, Nan Province, Thailand I was participating in a one night Performance Art Event, curated by Champion Apisuk with assistance from DASTA in Nan, as part of the Asiatopia 2013 program. My work was part of, and a response, to the the city context during a major street festival of Market Traders and Stalls along the Main Street of Nan. All the Market Stall Performance Texts were translated into Thai and I tried to sell my wares/ideas to the passing public.
