Abstract

Distance-learning engineering courses supportingremote laboratory experimentation, afford a numberof critical benefits including flexible access toresources. Creating an effective and integratedlearning environment which allows the access, control and monitoring of embedded devices andinstrumentation over the Internet is challenging.Recent advances in web technologies andapplications have enabled increased levels offunctionality and accessibility for remotelaboratories. However, remote learning by its verynature provides limited educator assistance and froma students’ perspective it is inevitable that at somestage of the experimental process, context specifichelp will be required. This paper addresses thesupport for intelligent user help in the context ofremote experimentation for embedded systems andpresents a semi-automated user-assistance system, which supports the current remote experimentationlaboratory available at the University of Ulster. Anexample micro controller experiment is used todemonstrate the effectiveness of the user-help system.
