This is the introductory chapter by the editors that sets out what is meant by the term peripheral and the appeal of peripheral regions for tourism and certain types of tourism. The chapter explores the relative absence of tourism research on peripheral landscapes and describes the range of landscapes that the book will address through the various contributions of the invited authors to write in this edited book. This introductory chapter also provides a synopsis of each chapter that makes up each section of the book.
