Abstract

This keynote provided industry with an overview of the potential that National Parks can offer destinations. The paper outlined a number of supply and demand driven approaches to management of protected areas, noting that issues of crowding around key sites is not easily overcome as the main attractions in places are what visitors are drawn toward and that substituting them with secondary sites is not really an option. The paper illustrated through a number of international examples that tourism within protected areas must be managed in a balanced way with the need to protect the unique ecological integrity that places possess.
