This paper challenged many of the conventional views of industry regarding the relationship between tourism and the environment based on the extensive field of impact research by tourism scholars. Attendees were challenged to consider some realities about tourism and impacts, including the absence of a baseline to establish impacts arising from tourism activity, that it is often hard to prove a cause and effect relationship exists, that many impacts are cumulative and the change takes place over long time periods. The paper also set out the position that when it comes to impacts and relationship between tourism and environment it is not a numbers problem but rather a problem of how one effective manages the numbers. The keynote concluded with a number of sensible supply and demand approaches that are commonly used, and that a toolkit of approaches are now well established to assist managers.
