Abstract

Lecture provided an overview of the opportunity that trails and routes offer for tourism, particulary those focused on cultural and heritage settings. The impact however is dependent on the scale of trail involved and the level of engagement with it. A conceptual model is presented to illustrate a number of trail engagement scenarios using different trail developments in Northern Ireland, including the Causeway Coastal Route, St Patrick Trail and the CS Lewis Trail. Stakeholder assessment of these three trails illustrate that the opportunity is still not being capitalised upon and that pressing matters remain in terms of their ongoing development (in the case of some) as well as how they are managed.
