Abstract

Five Sketches are a sequence of filmic episodes that describe architecture in different ways. Shown as part of a series of film installation at the Describing Architecture Exhibition in Dublin in 2013. On the basis that Film and Architecture are conceived in similar ways: they both take shape in time, this set of filmic sketches explores short portrayals of architecture and time. The sketches glimpses into a series of ‘windows’ (both physical and cinematic) as short portraits of architects at work. The material was part of the making of the Film 'Drawing on Life' but is shown as independent sequences with previously unscreened footage. By identifying five short sequences from the process of making the film as ‘a sketchbook montage’ these insights provide ‘windows within windows’ as a glimpse into the making of the film. The five sketches are:Building the Drawing - O’Donnell + Tuomey 7 Books -Tom de PaorThe World as Garden -Tom de PaorThe Architecture of Words- Shane O’TooleA Dublin Street -Grafton Street
