Abstract

The role of the business school as an important stakeholder in the social economy is reviewed alongside supportive public policy as part of an enabling innovation ecosystem. Further understanding of the social economy and social enterprises are discussed and compared with emerging terms such as social capitalism. This is followed by an overview of the Social Enterprise Value Incubator (SEVI) that was recently launched as part of the University of Ulster Business School's - Centre for SME Development. SEVI is a knowledge transfer incubator that acts as a gateway for social enterprises to gain value in research projects, academic enterprise activities and classroom settings. The SEVI model is premised on good practices within the university incubator research literature and has also been benchmarked against several global social enterprise initiatives in the US and Europe.
