Abstract

Lampeter and its hinterland occupy the geographical centre of Welsh-speaking South Wales. The area lies west of the wide moorish expanse which constitutes the mountainous backbone of Wales and which has, to some extent, protected it from English influences. This is the first volume in a series which attempts a comprehensive description of the phonological and grammatical sinews of the traditional spoken Welsh of the area which constitutes the northernmost extent of many features considered as typically southern The first volume gives a ‘supra-oppositional’ phonological description of the sounds of the Welsh of the Lampeter area. Not only is the linguistic data based on actual examples of speech analysed in a functionalist manner, but the dynamics of Lampeter Welsh are investigated in order to establish which forms are recessive and which are expansive. Great care is taken to separate forms representative of the colloquial language from forms representative of the standard literary language.
