Abstract

Imagine if you will, an Irish sportsman sweating an oath of allegiance to the King and willingly representing the British Empire in an international athletics meet in 1930. Watch him stand for God Save the King, salute the Union flag and honour the Empire, in the shadows of the renunciation of this same flag by the Irish Olympians some twenty years prior. Note the particular national emblem that he wears and the colour of his shirt.
