Abstract

This chapter asks how British academic values, some of them native to universities in the United Kingdom, can expect to deal effectively with managerialist plans and policies. It claims that transmission of Humboldtian ideas is a way forward. It dissects Humboldt's three "unities", then offers an analysis of Bildung -- the general idea of what makes a person aesthetically, socially, and morally "educated". A transmuted, but well-founded, version of Humboldt's and FIchte's educational schemens may strengthen the British university's idea of itself; and it is high time to do this work, as the move to "marketisation" gathers force in the United Kingdom.
