Abstract

‘Recent decades have seen the provision of sporting activities become an increasingly significant part of tourism’ (Devine, 2009: 10). Weed (2009) discusses how the growing popularity of sports tourism is providing established and emerging destinations with an additional vehicle to help them develop their tourism industries. Visit Scotland, for instance, is keen to promote the country as a destination for adventure sports, water sports and outdoor activities such as trekking and mountain biking. Elsewhere, New Zealand is renowned for its adventure sports whilst Canada has turned its attention to promoting winter sports. Trekking in the wild in Central and South America and Africa is also becoming increasingly popular, whilst countries like Croatia and Greece are keen to promote themselves as archetypal sailing destinations. This paper will discuss the sports tourism market and provide an insight into how the Republic of Ireland has developed its sports tourism product.
