Abstract

This workreviewstheuseofsunlighttoproducetheHO� radicals byTiO2 nanophotocatalysis.There-acting systemsnecessaryforperformingsolarphotocatalysiswillbedescribedandthefactorswhichgovernthekineticsofphotocatalysissuchasinitialconcentrationofreactant,massofcatalyst,pH,temperature,radiant flux andconcentrationofoxygenarehighlighted.Severalapproachesinordertoimprovethephotocatalysisefficiency ofTiO2 will bealsodescribed.Solarreactorsengineeringissuesforphotocatalyticwatertreatmentwillbereviewedaswellastheuseofthesolarphotocatalyticprocessesto inactivatemicroorganismspresentinwater,placingspecialemphasistothemechanismsactingduringthe process,mainlyhydroxylradicalandsingletoxygengeneration,andonexperimentalsystemsmadeto optimizethisdisinfectiontechnique.Heterogeneousphotocatalysisisalsoanattractivetechniqueforobtaining hydrogeninacleanway.Inthelastdecadesdifferentphotocatalyticsystemsforhydrogengenerationwithsimultaneousremovaloforganicpollutantshavebeenstudiedatlaboratoryscalebut,sofar,littlehasbeenpublishedaboutthesesystemsatalargerscale.Thepresentworkwillalsoshowthesimultaneous photocatalytichydrogenproductionandorganicpollutantremovalunderdirectsolarir-radiation andatpilot-plantscaleatthePlataformaSolardeAlmería(PSA).
