Abstract

The paper discusses a research project using contaminated sediments to replace a portion of the raw feedstock materials in portland cement manufacture. Dredged materials inherently contain significant amounts of silica, alumina, calcium, and iron oxides, all of which are important to portland cement manufacture. Proposed is a technology that uses an existing facility to treat and manage the large amounts of dredged material produced, while reducing the demand on raw materials. The methods and preliminary results from a bench-scale manufacture and evaluation of portland cement clinker manufactured with dredged material are presented.
