Reported in this paper are findings of a research project being carried out to develop a beneficial use management strategy for contaminated dredged materials. As dredged materials inherently contain valuable resources - namely AI2O3, SiO2 and Fe2O3 - the premise of this work is to capitalize on these properties to manufacture Portland cement, a construction material requiring considerable quantities of these three elements for its manufacture. Laboratory-scale investigations have been carried out to investigate the ability to incorporate dredged material as an alternative feedstock while maintaining product quality. Simultaneously, the fate of organic and inorganic contaminants present in the dredged material are being investigated to ensure a safe process and final product.
