Adriana Ionascu’s practice investigates the technical and conceptual territory of craft and the contemporary cultural positioning(s) of craft in relation to digital fabrication. In this view she is concerned with the shifting physicality and hybrid materiality of different craft mediums; and with making processes which investigate form-giving in terms of digital methods of production (Rhino, 3-dimanesional scanning, and Sense software programs, CNC milling and 3-D printing).Ionascu’s current work is a set of experiments in generating form resulted from self-3D scanning in ‘Sense’ programme, bringing together physical and virtual materials, and overlapping formats of exploration of form-movement. The aim is to extend form-making toward digital technologies (computation, design and manufacturing strategies across craft and design), and to develop new types of objects. The drawings exhibited as part of the Jerwood drawing Prize Exhibition are fragments of transitional objects – their surfaces arrested at a particular time in the movement of form-giving.Selected from original drawings, the Jerwood Drawing Prize has established a reputation for its commitment to championing excellence, and to promoting and celebrating the breadth of contemporary drawing practice. The exhibition provides a platform to showcase the work of UK-based drawing practitioners, from student to established, and as a project helps to define a wider understanding of the role and value of drawing in creative practice.
