Abstract

The artist was invited to perform in the International Festival by the BBeyond Committee. In this Performance Artwork the artist responded to current political issues and concerns relevant to himself and the Spanish audience. Particular reference was made to the British vote to leave Europe, commonly referred to as ‘Brexit’. A folding table was set up as the central structure within the performance. The artist had cut a hole in the tabletop, which he had concealed under several maps, one of the British Isles and another of Europe.During the performance the artist interacted with the audience in several ways. He asked a member of the audience to sit at the table and share some food. Afterwards he asked her for money. Later he asked the audience members to hold the end of threads connected to a moneybox, in such a way as to lift the moneybox off the tabletop and maps. Later he went round the audience and asked for financial donations. He then partially cut Britain out of the European Map, so as it remained connected to the rest of Europe along the Northern Irish border with Ireland. He pulled this map over his head and wore it like a tunic. Once again he asked members of the audience for donations. The artist then raised the table on wooden legs. Afterwards he emerged from under the table wearing a pigs mask and pushing up through the maps on the table top. He walked around the space with the table on his shoulders and his head, in the pig mask, above the table. He then extracted himself from the table and mask and left the space
