Abstract

'Flow' was made during student hand building workshops in the Ceramics Studio of the Belfast School of Art in Sept. 2016. It was accepted for the CONCORSO INTERNAZIONALE DELLA CERAMICA D’ARTE DI GUALDO TADINO, in August 2017. Following selection ‘Flow’ was awarded an ‘Honourable Mention’ and the one of the ‘Juror’s Prize(s)’ by Rolando Giovannini, Curator, Professor of Verona Fine Arts Academy and Professor at the Architecture High School and Landscape Polytechnic, Milan, Member of IAC Geneva. ‘Flow’ examines the movement of glaze during the firing process on a perpendicular axis to the presentation of the (wall mounted) sculpture. Therefore, the presumed flow of the liquid glaze in a vertical downward direction due to gravity, is presented in the actual piece flowing on a horizontal axis. This forms part of one of Moore’s research questions where the movement of glaze over a three-dimensional surface can alter the perception and orientation of the piece. As the theme of the CONCORSO INTERNAZIONALE DELLA CERAMICA D’ARTE DI GUALDO TADINO is ‘Water, Wonder of the Earth’ the focus of ‘Flow’ and the movement of its glaze, was relevant to the Exhibition theme.
