Abstract

A Good and Spacious Land, by Donovan Wylie, (Yale University Press 2017), examines the topographic changes resulting from the construction of the highway interchange (I-95/I-91) in New Haven, Connecticut. The work examines the American highway as a metaphor for the biblical Exodus narrative within American mythology, and the concept of promise, and westward expansion. Research explores the American highway as a defence architecture – official name Interstate and Defence Highway - and the critical influence of the biblical exodus narrative within American history, identity, and architecture. Essay’s in the book include The Merge, by Laura Wexler, Professor of American Studies, Professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Co-Chair of the Women’s Faculty Forum at Yale. Donovan Wylie was Happy and Bob Doran Artist-in-Residence between 2014 & 2016. The Happy and Bob Doran Artist-in-Residence Program enables one or more artists each year, at a pivotal point in their careers, to explore new avenues of thinking and image making by availing them to the intellectual and physical resources of Yale University.
